AJAX Feedback Mechanism
The iBegin blog has posted some information about a handy little Ajax feature they’re offering up to the public for download - an Ajax feedback mechanism.
So a few weeks ago I was thinking how people are using our site, but I have no clue what their feelings are. Are the results good? Great? Craptastic? Repeat visitors are not a good measurement either - I used to visit Toronto.com a lot, but only because they were really the only game in town. Did I like their site? Not really … but I kept coming back out of necessity.
So we set out to build a quick and easy feedback mechanism. A little floater/popup that lets you quickly rate a page. All AJAX driven of course.
The module is simple to use (and alter) to adapt to the look and feel of your site and makes it simple to integrate into your site, especially if you’re using PHP. A script accompanies it to recieve the Ajax requests and plug it into your database to store the results.

A few things which arise when i try out the demo.
[*] The thing appears when you hover, yet you have to click to close the object.
[*] After choosing a rating it doesn’t “stick” to the bottom of the screen but jumps up a line if the response message is short.
Other than that, a great replacement for the “star” rating mechanism.

Chris, did you check the used JavaScript code? Stuff like `strHTML = strHTML+` and “ doesn’t really make my heart beat faster. I don’t necessarily want to hammer on code quality, especially since such a system is a nice application of the Ajax ideas, but it *does* matter.

The ++, +, =, -, — are a bit confusing. The stars that are used by the lies of netfilx are a superior method of rating. It is very clear what one star means and what 5 stars mean.

is it compliant with firefox?
Yes, it works with Firefox! :-)
I managed to make it work with vBulletin, check it out: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=118393
It uses the same code but saves the ratings into a database and it even generates a statistic so that an Admin gets to know what people thing about the community. :-)
Widgets like this for feedback are awesome! we used one on our demo page ( http://developer.ebusiness-apps.com/technologies/webdevelopment/codeandcomponents/ebagrid/productdemos/gridv3/LiveScrolling/index.htm ) and then open sourced it cuz so many of our customers thought it was so neat:) It’s a simple feedback form that sits in the corner of the screen and then flies donw when the user clicks on it.
