Backbase Struts Edition

Category: Announcements

Java folk. Still writing Struts applications and want to spice them up with some Ajax?

Backbase has released a Struts edition that tries to help you out:

The Struts Edition provides a comprehensive AJAX development framework to ajaxify Struts-based applications. It combines the richness of AJAX on the client with the maturity of Struts on the server. Backbase takes care of all the AJAX plumbing work and makes AJAX development fast and easy for Struts developers. By allowing companies to leverage existing Struts code and skills, the Backbase AJAX Struts Edition extends the lifetime of the Struts-based web presentation tier and is an essential ingredient for application modernization.

The Backbase AJAX Struts Edition remedies both of these shortcomings:

  • It allows rendering to the Backbase AJAX engine, allowing richer presentation through the use of pre-defined AJAX widgets and behaviors;
  • It allows for partial page updates, i.e. a response that will update an area on the page instead of rendering a complete new page.

All of this works via struts taglibs that you can use. I do not know if they support the Struts Action Framework (2.0).

Too little, too late, too expensive (don’t know how much, but not free and not Open Source) and not too great (from the demos)

Lol Kevin. Sad state of affairs when people say software costs too much if it’s not free. How ridiculous.

I am very pleased to see how Backase is advertizing with this struts edition. Ideo Technologies is delivering forr a couple of months, SweetDEV RIA, an Apache 2 open source edition with very advanced ajax widgets/tags that you can use in your struts application. Just try it…
