Derek Powazek: Ajax is to traditional Web, what IM is to Email

Almost.

Ajax is more like if email had IM embedded in it.

Which, now that I think about it, is a _really_ cool idea: imagine receiving an email and being able to jump straight into a live discussion about the topic instead of taking ages to craft another message…

hmm.

To summ up:

“Ajax is to traditional Web, what IM is to Email”
+ gmail is to IM what IM is to Email
= gmail is what Ajax has done to Email

:D

Iain, you can sort of do this in Mac OS X’s Mail.app if you have iChat running; there’s a tiny colored ball that appears next to the sender’s name if they’re currently online.
