There is no way in hell that digg needs to load that many files or that many kilobytes. I understand that functions from every file get used -- at least on some of the pages -- but a little judicious pruning and combination would seriously cut down on load times. Just the sheer number of files (all of which block painting routines) often create a bottleneck for me, if I'm looking at digg on a slower connection.

The video-in-lightbox idea is great, but the implementation didn't work very well in IE7 - clicking the background causes the lightbox to close, but the video continues to play...

It annoys me that with all of the Lightbox implementations out there, not a single one supports the back button (that I've seen). The Lightbox links feel just like regular links and I'm trained to use the back button when I'm done looking at them.

I expected Digg would have had the sense to support this, but they don't, which is disappointing.

I totally agree with Andy. Digg rocks, and I KNOW they have loads of traffic, but it does feel sluggish at times.

I count 245kb of Javascript required to load... thats heavy, all images together are around 19kb and the HTML is 57.7kb. Varius drag & drop scripts account for almost 100kb of that load, what exactly can you drag & drop on Digg anyway? Only some of the scripts are obfuscated (to minimize size), im guessing those who are left are that way cause of license issues.

The lightboxes didn't work very well for me. They have the Flash player hidden behind an element or something because I can't click on any of the video controls.

I really like the new design. It has an iStockPhoto feel to it... very simple and not overboard on the graphics.
