Google Writely: The start of the Google Office

Category: Editorial, Google, LiveEdit

<>p>We blogged about Writely way back (in the Web 2.0 sense), and it was an instant hit. Then we saw that Google has purchased the Writely folk.

Many are saying that this shows their desire to get into the online office market, but maybe it is more about talent? The functionality in Writely can be used in a wide range of products that Google has, and will have.

The next question: Will Microsoft buy DabbleDB as they realise that it is what Office Live should be? There is a huge problem with enterprises with Access DBs that need to migrate to the web. There is PAIN in that area, and Dabble DB takes on a lot of that pain.

Writely was written in .NET – it could just as likely signal Google’s move to .NET. (Yeah right!)

I think more likely buying small non-profitable (aka cheap) companies with awesome talent is a inexpensive, quick way to get more qualified people on board.
Look at Blogger – they haven’t exactly taken over the blogosphere with that purchase.

It’s a good point about bringing on creative talent in an efficient way.

Looking at each application alone, such as your Blogger example, is one thing… if you can integrate the applications in rich ways, the benefit multiplies to users and to Google. I look for this mindset from Google as they acquire more pieces to the puzzle. They can start building applications that function in cooperation together, share data, interact in rich ways.

…besides the client-side code and AJAX implementation that makes the product, no doubt these Writely guys did a good job developing on the server-side also… given that Google’s server farms consist of a cluster of Linux boxes, is it a fair assumption they would move the server-side code to Java?

Comment by Mark Holton — March 10, 2006

I wouldn’t assume that they are going to re-write their software for Linux in Java. End users don’t care what server it runs on, they just want it to work and be fast. Given the uptime and performance problems with gmail and analytics have been having, maybe Google is interested moving their servers to something else.

If that’s the case, they could have Writely for their expertise in running in a clustered Windows environment. :)

imho… on the basis of cost alone (let alone performance, but I don’t want to debate that here) there is no reason why Google would ever implement a Windows server environment on a large scale. I think it’s safe to say you won’t ever see “Windows Server” server farms at GOOG… it seems to directly contrast what their infrastructure is all about.

Hmm, mono runs on Linux pretty well (and on Solaris-sparc (beta) and on OSX/x86 (pre-alpha?)), so Google does not have to move to Windows. That said, Google has hired a number of very smart Java engineers who seem to be doing Java development exclusively. And it’s not that hard to move from Java to C# or vice versa.

DabbleDB has great technology, and certainly has a market for its service. It would be a good acqusition target for Microsoft.
