@Chad
Quite a rant there. By the way, the IE Developer Toolbar *is not* read-only, you can edit properties (css/attributes/etc) on any DOM element. It still isn't as useful as Firebug, but I'm happy with being able to change CSS at runtime and there are plenty of debuggers for JS.

Just in case anyone from Microsoft is reading this post, can I get an invite into the beta tester program?

I'm not getting an error here, but perhaps that's because I haven't got a Passport and thus haven't signed in?

Chad: same error to me. I guess access is restricted to the guys who received the e-mail, not the casual visitor. We'll have to wait until the beta goes public.

You would think that anyone who needs instructions on how to follow a link in an email does not meet the minimal standards to be part of the web developer community.

Does anyone know whether IE8 can be installed, without removing the previous IE, or do I have to create yet another virtual machine for it?

Microsoft was creating problem for unicode font rendering in firefox 1.x, 2.x. Now then will get shock when they know improvements in firefox 3.0.

It's sexiest browser ever.

Hey, I tried that link ( http://connect.microsoft.com/InvitationUse.aspx?ProgramID=2038 ) and got a :

The content that you requested cannot be found or you do not have permission to view it.

What was the point of this post Dion? Should be try to register, or are we supposed to be encouraged by the move by move by Microsoft to be more Developer focused?

I don't see any text in this post that indicates that the title "IE8 Beta 1 is focused on the developer community" is accurate, as their is not one line of text in this post that indicates such... unless it is the fact that you received this message that suggests this notion to you. I think you might have read to far into this email, as just getting it, aside from the lack of any mention of the "developer" in the actual message, does not seam to indicate that microsoft has helped us developers out any more than in their script debugger/developer toolbar (which is, and just as a sidenote, not even close to firebug for firefox - can't edit anything in real time!!!. such a mess to work with, it is like READ-ONLY not at all focused on the developer trying to actually do something).

For Microsoft to send this email out and say "IE8 Beta 1 is focused on the developer community, with the goal of gaining valuable feedback to improve Internet Explorer 8 during the development process", they are in essense saying: "Please tell us what you think, because we know that you developers will give us free feedback that we can work with, and we won't have to pay you a penny. And since you are the only ones hanging on by a thread (i.e. we know real users won't give us any feedback on bugs), we're throwing this marketing ploy to get free TECHNICAL feedback, and then after we listen to you, we'll fix our bugs (cause that's the only feedback we're interested in), and you'll have helped us release IE7.2 with the name IE8, and still be stuck wondering why we defined standards for the developer world rather than standards determining our course of development).

WE'RE SCREWED!!!
