Friday, March 24th, 2006 – Real-time Social Page Browsing & Chat

Category: Showcase

Social bookmarking sites have changed the face of the web today. They bring links that people might never see to light, and encorage “subscribing” to friends whos links you like. Unfortunately, that’s usually where the interaction stops. People go to your feed and view the links that interest them. There’s no interaction between viewer and poster – but Mobber is looking to change that.

Mobber’s patent-pending software shows you who’s on a particular web page, allowing you to chat with them privately or in a group. We make the web a two-way real-time medium. Got a site, or online profile? Add Mobber to it in under 5 seconds. Go on… mob the web!

The concept behind Mobber is simple – there’s two ways to interact with other people on the service. You can either look at the “who’s online now” list and see what page they’re checking out or you can head to a page with a Mobber bar showing the people viewing that page.

I can hear you asking “So, is that all for the social aspect of it?” No, of course not – Mobber takes it up to the next level by providing all users the ability to chat with each other in a separate window. You get a bubble notification on the Mobber bar of the site that you’re on that someone wants to talk. When you click, a new window pops up and a chat session is started. Both public and private chat sessions are supported, so you can chat with all of the viewers of a page at once. There’s also the ability to add Friends and to view Similar Sites to the one you’re on.

The signup only takes a few seconds (five, according to them), so head over and check it out – if for nothing else than to see some cool Javascript in action.

Did you guys saw the Patent-pending thing, is this really the first service of it’s kind?

Last year, I was already working on a concept like this. It was a userscript for the GreaseMonkey plugin for FF. I stopped working on it because even the latest test version made FF crash after a while. Anyway, the idea isn’t exactly new, so I don’t think it can be patented..

[…] Mobbler has real-time chat on the homepage. You can just add their code so people on your site can start chatting with each other. […]
