Opera 8.5: Browser Free, and new JavaScript features

Category: Browsers

People have been wondering about this for awhile. Opera is now a free browser.

The question is:

Does anyone care?

Is this going to bring Opera into the big time? What about if they had done this pre-Firefox?

About the Opera Browser

Already regarded as the world’s fastest, most secure browser, Opera speeds up your Web browsing with these innovative features:

  • Navigate quickly using intuitive mouse gestures and browser tabs
  • Start from where your last browsing session ended or save your entire session
  • Access downloaded files quickly with the transfer manager
  • Protect against identity theft and phishing with integrated security features
  • Speak up: surf the Web hands-free using voice commands
  • Shop Amazon, browse Ebay, and search the Web with Google right from the address bar
  • Set reminders for Web pages you visit with the notes feature

Additional information

Opera 8.0 has some cool JavaScript-ish features:

  • User JavaScript allows you to specify local JavaScript files for Opera to include on every page that you visit. Greasemonkey.
  • Browser JavaScript is a feature that allows Opera to automatically fix incompatible Web pages, out of date scripts, and pages that inadvertently block Opera. The script file is automatically distributed by Opera Software ASA, and can be used to apply fixes to specific Web sites, and specific scripts. Distributed scripts with the browser!

“Does anyone care?”

Well, considering it’s the browser I’m reading this in, yeah.

Eric –

Cool :)

What are the features that make you choose Opera as your browser of choice?

Opera is mighty fast and responsive. It’s not my regular browser, however. For me, the Adblock extension alone is enough to give Firefox the edge.
