Prototyping Desktop Apps with Ajax

Category: Editorial

Michael Mahemoff has discussed Tony Darugar’s points on using Ajax as a prototyping stop-gap:

As I went to download Tcl/Tk, it occured (sic.) to me that I could use AJAX. All I’m looking for is a simple screen that displays each record in turn. I can slap together the HTML page in no time. I can update the contents of the HTML page by simply slapping the values into javascript variables and eval’ing the result on the browser. Nice and easy.

We are getting more and more tools to help make building Ajax applications simpler and simpler. At some point it will be very easy indeed, which will:

  • Make it even better for prototyping
  • After prototyping, you may well think that the Ajax app is good enough!

There are definite needs for desktop apps, however that niche is getting smaller and smaller all the time. With Ajax you get the reach of the web, and with the Flash/Ajax bridge you can even embed very rich components into the application.
