Search.ch Does Real Estate

Category: Mapping, Showcase

Before Google Maps, there was map.search.ch, the Swiss map website that went live back in October 2004. Now search.ch has built a new HousingMaps-style real estate search on top of their mapping software: immo.beta.search.ch.

There’s lots of useful Ajax features here. Bernhard Seefeld, former CTO of search.ch, immo.beta.search.ch points out:

  • The search area is determined by the current map view
  • The results list is only loaded on demand when the users scrolls
  • The sliders have real time statistics as background to guide the user.

You can read some more of his comments in his blog entry, along with some handy English translations. (BTW Don’t worry too much about the language thing, the UI is self-explanatory.)

Gregor Rothfuss says they’ve managed to one-up HousingMaps and Trulia:

  • tighter integration between list view and map (just mousing over a list item show’s it’s location)
  • histograms for the search terms to give you a quick idea what the spread in prices is, for instance
  • shows matches in context (public transport, shopping etc)
  • leverages the superior map quality from endoxon
  • allows you to take notes for each object
  • shows you new matches for your search since your last visit

search.ch is Swiss, not Swedish.

It reminds me of how BlueNile.com’s diamond search works. By narrowing a search by specs and price, people should be able to figure out what they can afford.
