Spongecell – new Ajax calendar

Category: Calendar, Ruby, Showcase

<>p>Spongecell is the latest in the long line of Ajax calendars. Its built on Ruby on Rails and uses the scriptaculous goodies, but the coolest feature is the “spongebar”. It takes a natural English pharse and figures out what appoitment to add to your calendar. So you can type in “meet over $5 flavored coffee at Starbucks 4 pm tomorrow” and it figures things out and adds the appropriate appointments.

The interface seemed nice and responsive and fairly clean. Drag and drop seemed to be well used, though I wasn’t sure about some of the effects.

Other featuers include:

  • easy mobile interface
  • iCalendar import/export and RSS feeds
  • simple, intuitive UI

Btw, there is a launch party in San Francisco on Wednesday if you are in the area.

So what is it that crashes Safari? Just curious… I mean not supporting is silly enough but understandable. If you leave a browser crashing bug in your site though, that is sad.

Sounds like you should get a more robust browser ;)

haha hahah ahahah…

More like people shouldn’t use AJAX as an excuse to return to ‘best viewed in’ thinking and instead deal with standards compliant-ish browsers and live with their bugs.

Safari has some annoying js issues… but still, Safari users are more likely ical users so it just makes sense in this case. Regardless:

OK concept – weak execution (so far). Hold the lanch party and apply some more red bull to get this out of alpha state.

What about online calendars like HipCal that actually *do* have nice, well made interfaces?

Comment by Dan — January 30, 2006

It’s not that bad. I like the click and drag behaviours – pretty slick. Also: who cares about safari anyway? :) [here it comes!]

i think ill stick to hipcal(the real deal). the only thing that this has ical import and draggable editing. which hipcal will have real soon, and it will actually work rather than missing things like recurring events. please dont even consider this. check out hipcal its got everything you need. and it’s well designed. seriouly though, that $hit hurts my eyes.
