It can be hard to find direct sources of government grants, let alone a source that would actually consider your appplication. Recently I found a few websites that lay it all out for you, all the sources, websites and telephone numbers you need to apply to numerous agencies that offer any type of grants. I also found a great resource that takes you by the hand and tells you how to write the perfect grant application. You can check it out here:

[...] Ajax with xajax By Russ J Early this year I was talking to a friend of mine and he told me that he was working on an open source project called xajax. At the time I hadn’t really started to play with Ajax yet but the project sounded interesting so I filed it away in the back of my mind for future retrieval. Then in May my company sent me to The Ajax Experience in San Fransisco. That got me all excited about what could be done with Ajax. It also scared me because of the dificulties that people experience when using Ajax. So now one of my projects has got me using xajax. [...]

John,

I often go to academic conferences too. They are often a very different type of conference, and don't offer the services that we will offer (food, paying for speakers to fly in etc).

This isn't to say that there are not fantastic academic conferences as there are (and they often have grants to offset costs).

We think that this conference is good value for money. There are other conferences that are charging more for a single day. This conference is all about getting people together.

Cheers,

I frequently go to academic conferences--at less than half the cost (sometimes about a third of the cost). I have to say that privately-run conferences typically have the appearance of too much profit for the organizers. Too bad...I'd like to see some of those talks.

Dion,

Thanks for following up. I just felt compelled to submit a damn-that's-what-i-get-for-working-for-a-cash-conscious-startup post. Mostly driven out of jealousy that I might miss out on the fun. Believe me, I understand completely. People like me would probably complain even if it was half the cost. But it's expensive to put on a quality conference and it looks like this one will be great. If I don't make the conference, I'd definitely like to join in the evening festivities.

Tyler,

Unfortunately we had a choice on whether to try to do a cheap conference in a location that isn't as expensive. San Fran is pricey, but we thought that it made sense to have a really fantastic conference for Ajax, and we will be offering some great perks for attendees (as well as the quality content). I wish we could announce this now.... but hopefully soon.

Cheers,

I wish it wasn't so pricey, but that is an absolutely incredible lineup of speakers.
