Timeplot: Canvas-based Specialized Charting Tool
On July 1st and July 7th, we posted about Timeline from the Simile project.
We're pleased to post about another related project: Timeplot, which is
a canvas-based ajaxy plotting companion to
our Timeline widget (that also supports the same timeline data formats).
Follow the link; the screen shot doesn't do it justice. While you're there, don't miss the comprehensive tutorial, which shows how easy it is to create these charts.
In a nutshell, you do this:
and the "data.txt" file is just a CSV file. And the tutorial even shows you how to make it look purty.

This just made my day :)
Okay, now this is just cool.

Doesn’t support IE (any version) yet. that’s 90% of browsers out there. But, it is very cool indeed (in FireFox anyway)

This is really pretty slick. For IE support there is always ExCanvas (?), I’m sure it should be doable. The charts are a little noisy, but there is a lot of good functionality there.
68% of browsers for me, not 90%. Germany, official city page ( = visitors from the “general population”), 20 Mio. PI/month.
dig around i know ive seen ExCanvas somewhere in simile’s SVN tree - maybe even in this project, or one of the related ones like timegrid
neato!
That damn tool aint working in Opera.
There is no need to swear, firefox is a free download if you want to play with the canvas timeline :)
For something like this (and I’m throwing this out there) wouldn’t SVG be a much better solution? With it’s cross-browser capability and all?
ExCanvas is nothing new… but in this case it’s rather annoying to hear something like “download a free browser”; see if you tell it to one of your clients who has a browser compatibility list.
I know this might not be the place to ask, but what’s up with the ratings?
re: ratings - my guess is some commerical competitor is trying to vote them down.
