That’s luxury. A good typographer only needs one typeface. In one size. Without bold or italics, either.

I completely agree with you. In one of the workshops I attended, the speaker reminded companies who are fond of hiring outsourced designers. They were told not to rely much on the portfolio but to hire someone who takes into consideration the three important factors in a good design â€“ usability, typography and accessibility.

Now you got me working 7 days a week. Iâ€™ve been reviewing too many portfolios lately and I think what youâ€™ve pointed out are the essentials. Thanks for this quick rundown. Hopefully, we may be able to improve our products and services with your list as our guide.

If fact i just made a template from the theme iâ€™m currently using and after veiwing the souce code i just saved as html and with a bit of copy and pasting moved all the content on my older html pages to the new template now my older pages all look the same as the blog template. On a new site this isnt a problem but this one has been around a while before i used WordPress.

Publishing is publishing… on paper or on the web, so I agree that design is 95% typography. I think you are right on the mark about WordPress. It is the one platform you don’t need to fight every step of the way.

This article, in my opinion, is right on the money. Proper typography helps and aids accessibility and useability, and the poster (who went by the name teletubbie) is obviously not very well educated, or is simply a troll here. At any rate, typography is important and I think this IS one of the reasons WordPress still remains popular.
Then, I have to add, that people should get decent web copy writers in when they design their pages. You can have all the best design in the world, but if it’s stock loaded with grammar and spelling errors… and also sounds just plain unexciting… you’ve lost the audience as well. Hardly what you want!

I found using WordPress to design my web sites a great time saver and with plugins for automatic sitemap generation and SEO optimisation and easy changing of themes its such a web design time saver. If fact i just made a template from the theme i’m currently using and after veiwing the souce code i just saved as html and with a bit of copy and pasting moved all the content on my older html pages to the new template now my older pages all look the same as the blog template. On a new site this isnt a problem but this one has been around a while before i used WordPress. Still have a load of article pages to move over but i should be able to automate some of it with a few block text replacer programs i have.

It seems the tech side is as ignorant and arrogant about this as the design side when it comes to usability. Typography in terms of readability is key to user experience. Have you never noticed how much easier it is to read from a well set book?

“Good readability doesn’t count as long as the grammar is correct” is like saying: “I don’t care if the picture is sharp or not, as long as it’s Star Wars.”

And that’s what the article is about. Not fancy fonts. Fancy fonts are usually a sign of bad design anyway. Give us Arial, that’s all we need.

The typefaces are one of the most pleasant surprises I got when I switched to a Mac. The default Windows ones are unbelievably ugly. The bitstream stuff under Ubuntu was nice, though.
